Lalow first appears in Fugitive Telemetry as a nondescript cargo hauler whose bare-bones interior—hatches instead of modules, cramped living quarters—makes it the perfect anonymous bolt-hole for the PreservationAux survey team. Over the course of the novel the ship quietly shifts from mere backdrop to active participant in the murder investigation, its stripped-down layout both concealing clues and forcing the characters into uncomfortably close quarters. By the end of the book, Lalow has become a symbol of the fragile independence the Preservation colonists are trying to maintain against corporate incursion.
