Gothen

Minor

Gothen moves like a man who has walked through fire and come out laughing, his wild eyes suggesting either madness or profound understanding. Black marks stain his clothes where magic failed to kill him. When that lopsided smile breaks across his face, you can't decide whether to trust him with your life or run in the opposite direction.

Gothen the magebreaker debuts in Promise of Blood as a battle-hardened mercenary renowned for his complete resistance to sorcery, his body and clothing perpetually scarred by the failed attacks of Privileged mages. Partnered with the Privileged-hunting Julene, he joins forces with Field Marshal Tamas's group, carrying an arsenal of weapons and wearing distinctive dark blue gloves etched with golden runes that hint at ancient or forgotten magic. His haunted demeanor and cryptic references to past encounters suggest deeper, unresolved traumas beyond the visible marks of battle. Though his role is largely confined to the first book, Gothen's presence underscores the series' themes of anti-magic resilience and the lingering scars of Adro's magical conflicts, with his faraway looks implying untold stories that echo through the Powder Mage universe.

Physical Description

A battle-worn man with a wild look in his eyes and a lopsided smile that never quite reaches them. Black scorch marks from sorcery stain his shirt. He has a noticeable bald patch at the back of his head which he often scratches. His clothing bristles with weapons—three pistols and numerous blades—held in place by countless buckles. When not in combat he carries himself with a deceptively casual air that fails to hide his lethal competence.

Evolution

His faraway look when speaking of previous encounters hinted at deeper scars than those visible on his skin or weapons.
