Gaes Binding

Magic System

Invisible sorcerous compulsion with no visual, glowing, or physical manifestation beyond the compelled behavior and physical restraints used as precaution.

In the Powder Mage Trilogy, a Gaes Binding is an invisible form of Privileged sorcery that implants an unbreakable sorcerous compulsion into a victim's mind, forcing them to carry out a specific command or die in the attempt. First encountered in Promise of Blood as a tool of the cabal of Privileged known as the Kez Cabal, it is used to turn captured individuals into unwitting assassins or saboteurs with no outward sign of its presence. The binding's insidious nature is revealed when characters like Tamas and his allies must contend with its effects on their own ranks, often requiring extreme measures such as physical restraints or execution to contain those affected. Across the series, the Gaes evolves from a mysterious threat into a key plot device highlighting the moral horrors of sorcery and the desperate countermeasures taken against it, including attempts to break or circumvent the compulsion through Privileged intervention or sheer willpower.
