The Else

Magic System

A parallel magical plane where all things possess colored auras (pastel glows); Privileged pull these auras into the real world with their right hand and direct them with the left; gunpowder has no aura, disturbing Privileged; manifests as shimmering heat, fire, rumbling earth, hardened air; appears as geometric or shimmering distortions.

The Else is a parallel magical plane existing alongside the physical world, visible primarily to those with sorcerous talent. In Promise of Blood, it manifests as a realm of shimmering heat, fire, rumbling earth, and hardened air where every object possesses a distinct colored aura—save for gunpowder, whose absence creates a disturbing void that Privileged sorcerers find deeply unsettling. Privileged draw these pastel auras into reality with their right hand and shape them with their left, producing geometric distortions or heat shimmers that mark their spellcasting. As the trilogy progresses, deeper understanding of The Else reveals its connection to ancient sources of power, the vulnerabilities it creates for magic users against gunpowder weapons, and its role in larger conflicts involving gods and primordial forces, ultimately forcing characters to confront whether the plane can be reshaped or if its fundamental rules can be broken.
