Mountainwatch Hounds

In the Powder Mage Trilogy, the Mountainwatch Hounds are introduced in Promise of Blood as three massive, long-haired mastiffs—larger and more powerful than wolves—bred or trained at the Mountainwatch. Owned exclusively by the enigmatic Privileged sorceress Rina, they serve as her fiercely loyal guardians, responding only to her commands and capable of incredible feats like crossing open ground under musket fire to savage enemies. Their most notable act comes during the chaos of the Adran coup, where they help protect Rina and demonstrate their terrifying prowess by bringing down threats despite overwhelming odds. Though they do not appear in subsequent books, the hounds underscore Rina's dangerous independence and the primal, magical edge she brings to the powder mage conflicts, leaving a lasting impression as one of the series' most memorable monstrous companions.
