The Proctors begin as the unseen, god-like overseers of the Institute’s brutal trials in Red Rising, their authority seemingly absolute. By the end of the first book their mystique is shattered when Darrow and his allies capture and bind them, exposing the Proctors as fallible, frightened adults rather than untouchable arbiters. Across the saga this moment marks the first crack in the Society’s rigid hierarchy, foreshadowing how later volumes will continue to strip away the veneer of institutional invulnerability.
