The Dwarf Mountains begin as a simple northern landmark in the Institute Valley of Red Rising, serving as the dramatic backdrop for Darrow’s early trials. Across the series they evolve from a static geographic feature into a strategic stronghold and symbolic bastion of resistance, their tunnels and peaks repeatedly repurposed for both refuge and ambush. By the later books they have become a living monument to the war’s shifting fronts—once a training ground, then a rebel redoubt, and finally a contested frontier whose control helps decide the fate of Mars itself.
