The Ismere Islands first appear in Iron Gold as a desperate refuge point during the catastrophic fall of Mercury, when civilian boats flee the advancing Society forces and seek shelter among the archipelago off Tyche. Though initially presented as a mere geographic footnote—an archipelago distinct from Vespasian Island—the islands quickly become a symbol of the Republic’s collapsing humanitarian efforts and the chaos of war. Their role underscores the widening gap between the Republic’s lofty ideals and the grim reality faced by displaced populations.
