Low Mountain Passes first appear in the Red Rising Saga as a strategic chokepoint in the Institute’s highlands, where Darrow’s early House Mars contingent is nearly annihilated by House Crows. Over subsequent books the passes become a recurring battleground whose control determines supply lines and troop movements across the northern hemisphere of Mars. By the later volumes, the passes have evolved from a purely tactical obstacle into a symbol of the fractured Republic’s inability to secure its own hinterlands, repeatedly changing hands between loyalist, rebel, and Society remnant forces.
