Mars begins as the distant, barely-glimpsed homeworld of the oppressed Reds and the gilded Golds who rule them, but across the saga it transforms into the central battleground of a solar-system-wide revolution. Early books treat the planet as little more than the backdrop for Darrow’s infiltration of the Institute and the subsequent civil war among the ruling families; later volumes reveal its vast continents, towering volcanoes, and sprawling cities as the literal and symbolic heart of the Republic’s struggle for survival.
