The Mound of Votum first appears in Dark Age as a grim battlefield monument on Mercury, its slopes crowned with the corpses of fallen soldiers from both the Republic and the Society Remnant. Over the course of the conflict, the mound transforms from a static memorial into a living symbol of attrition, its shifting trenches and ramparts marking the ebb and flow of the Mercurian campaign. By the novel’s climax, the mound becomes the fulcrum of the final assault on Helios, its blood-soaked earth witnessing both the Republic’s desperate stand and the Remnant’s last, futile counter-charge.
