Northwoods begins as an obscure, snow-laden wilderness on Mars, little more than a strategic footnote in the early days of Darrow’s rebellion. Over the course of the saga it transforms into a vital stronghold and symbolic heartland for the rising, its frozen ridges and hidden valleys sheltering everything from secret training camps to the climactic final confrontations of the war. By the later books, Northwoods is no longer a backdrop but an active participant in the conflict—its terrain, resources, and the communities that spring up within it shaping both military strategy and the cultural identity of the new order.
