S-1988 begins as a forgotten military depot in the Karin Cluster, its abandoned warehouses serving as the first staging ground for Darrow’s post-victory rebellion. Over the course of Morning Star, the asteroid transforms from a derelict rock into a covert launch point for the Rising, its hidden hangars retrofitted to shelter stolen torchShips and house the growing Sons of Ares fleet. By the novel’s climax, S-1988’s strategic value peaks when it becomes the secret rallying site for the final assault on Luna, its once-empty corridors now echoing with the war cries of an army that will topple the Society.
