The Southern Highlands begin as a misty, scout-haunted fringe of House Mars territory in the Institute Valley, little more than a rugged backdrop to early skirmishes. Across the saga the region grows in strategic weight, its gulches and ridges repeatedly repurposed for ambushes, supply routes, and desperate last stands that shape the outcome of the Institute’s civil war. By the later books the Highlands have become a symbolic frontier—its shifting control mirroring the larger struggle between the rising generation of Peerless Scarred and the crumbling hierarchy of the Society.
