The Deep begins as the claustrophobic, gas-lit mining tunnels beneath Lykos where Darrow and his kin claw out helium-3 for the Golds. By the later books it has transformed into the pressurized, bioluminescent cities of Europa, where the same Red descendants now build fleets and plot revolutions beneath alien oceans. This shift mirrors the saga’s larger arc: from subterranean servitude to oceanic sovereignty, the Deep becomes both sanctuary and staging ground for the Rising’s final gambits.
