Highland Wolves begin as simple background fauna in Red Rising, serving as a source of food and pelts for Institute students navigating the harsh Martian highlands. Their presence underscores the brutal, survivalist ethos of the Institute, where even the natural world is weaponized against the participants. Across the series, their role remains largely atmospheric, symbolizing the untamed wilderness that mirrors the primal struggles of the characters.
