Crusher is a three-year-old king’s roan, underfed and lame when he first appears, with an abscessed hoof and a distrustful, frightened manner. A small offering of apple reveals a softer note beneath his fear, but his condition worsens after he is ridden while lame, leaving him with a shattered cannon bone above the fetlock. The injured horse is ultimately put down, a stark end to the brief trust he had begun to show.
Description
Crusher is a lean three-year-old blue roan warhorse, richly colored with black points, his weight loss plain in the prominence of his backbone and ribs. He favors his right foreleg, and his ears flatten while his wide eyes roll when he is distressed; his tail often stays clamped down. His hoof has been abscessed, with a crack along the white line near the nail. Wary and tense in bearing, he shows a flicker of gentleness when he accepts an apple, his whiskers brushing the giver’s hand.
