Jenna’s mother is remembered as the woman who mothered her in every way except by blood, a devotion that gives her presence a lasting tenderness. Though dead before the story’s events, she remains connected to Jenna through a fine china cup decorated with blown roses and a jeweled dagger with a dragon-shaped hilt. These keepsakes make her feel both intimate and mysterious, a life whose details survive in the objects she left behind.
