Gift is one of Rock’s children, a Horneater boy who considers staying behind and fighting. He also leaves food for Lift—flatbread, curry, sugared mashed beans, and jam marked with a little face above the Horneater sign for love. His brief presence is defined by the tenderness of those offerings and the uncertainty of a young person standing near the edge of danger.
Description
Gift is identified as a Horneater boy, but the text gives no specific details about his face, hair, eyes, coloring, or build. His clothing is likewise undescribed. The clearest impression is of a young, considerate child, conveyed through the care he puts into the food he leaves.
