Maps

Major
First seen · Book 1 · Ch. 30

Maps has a broad, memorable face framed by a bushy beard and heavy eyebrows, with an easy familiarity that makes him seem like someone you might meet by a fire or at an inn. Beneath his ordinary, companionable manner is a bleak candor that cuts through the talk around him.

Maps is one of the bridgemen around Kaladin, first hovering near the group and later standing out by his flat face, bushy beard, thick eyebrows, and birthmark on his chest. He carries spears, asks for stories, and brings a familiar, almost innkeeper-like warmth to the camp. Yet he is no stranger to despair, remarking that the men are bound to die anyway. Maps is eventually killed by an arrow wound.

Description

Maps is a man with a flat face, thick eyebrows, and, in a prominent description, a bushy beard. Other glimpses show him balding, with his beard neatly trimmed or his face clean-shaven, so his grooming varies. A birthmark on his chest distinguishes him, and his plain bridgeman clothes include a brown leather vest and short trousers. His manner reads as familiar and unshowy, with the air of a man at ease among working people.
