Ral
Also known as Master Ral
- Minor
- First seen · Book 1 · Ch. 20
Ral is known through the work of his hands: a carpenter who values useful things, solid enough to be sat upon and made to last. There is a plainspoken practicality in that preference, a steady regard for craft over ornament.

Ral follows his father’s trade and becomes a carpenter in his town. He takes Tien on as an apprentice, though he is dissatisfied with the boy’s work and favors practical projects such as chairs. The text offers little more about his life, leaving him chiefly as a craftsman whose standards shape the brief glimpse we get of him.
Description
The text provides no physical description of Ral, so his height, build, coloring, hair, eyes, and facial features are unknown. His occupation suggests practical carpenter’s clothing, but no specific garments or tools are described. Keep his appearance understated and avoid assigning him distinctive features not given in the text.
