Valam is a distant figure of authority whose power seems to have ebbed with his health. Even in the title he carries, there is a sense of a shelter no longer strong enough to keep others from the storm.

Highprince Valam is the lord to whom Shallan’s family owes fealty, but illness has left him unable to offer House Davar the protection it once sought from him. His brief place in the story underscores the uncertainty surrounding the family’s standing and the fragile shelter of political allegiance. The text gives little more of his personal character or fate.
Description
The text provides no specific details about Valam’s face, complexion, hair, eyes, height, or build. He is identified as an ailing highprince, suggesting a weakened or frail bearing, but his appearance is otherwise undescribed. His rank implies noble dress, though no particular garments, colors, or accessories are specified.
