Tarbean emerges as the grim crucible of Kvothe's lost years, a sprawling port city whose alleys and gutters shape the boy into the man. Across the series, it transitions from a mere backdrop of survival into a haunting psychological landmark that Kvothe revisits in memory, revealing how its cruelties forged his resilience and sharpened his cunning. By the second book, Tarbean's presence lingers as a touchstone for Kvothe's reflections, underscoring the city's enduring role in his transformation from orphan to legend.
