Bill has the unmistakable air of a survivor: shaggy, lean, and still quietly content to keep walking beside his companions. There is something touching in his toughness, as if simple good sense and stubborn life are enough to carry him through.

Once Bill Ferny’s ill-used pony, Bill is taken on by the travellers and proves a loyal companion on the road. After being left behind, he makes his own way back to Bree, alive despite his rough, painfully lean condition. Nob takes him in and looks after him, giving the pony the comfort and care he had long deserved.
Description
Bill is a lean pony with a notably shaggy coat, rough as an old dog’s and a frame as thin as a clothes-rail. The text gives no coat color, markings, eye color, or precise height. He carries baggage when travelling and moves with a steady, companionable air. Despite his gaunt appearance, he is alive and seems content in the company of his companions.
