Shelob's Lair
Guided by treacherous Gollum, Frodo and Sam enter Shelob's dark tunnels. Gollum betrays them; Sam fights the monstrous spider with Sting and Galadriel's Phial, driving her back, but Frodo is stung and captured by orcs.
Outcome
Frodo is taken to the Tower of Cirith Ungol; Sam believes him dead and takes the Ring; Sam's loyalty is tested to its limit.
