Gorgoroth, the vast, fiery plateau of Mordor, emerges in The Two Towers as a hellish wasteland of ash and flame that Frodo and Sam must cross on their desperate quest. By The Return of the King, the plateau becomes the final crucible of the War of the Ring, its barren expanses witnessing the climactic confrontation between the forces of the West and Sauron’s hosts.
