Bolgana, of the Mongol Bayaut tribe and daughter of Hulákú’s chief secretary Gúgah, was successively the wife of Ábáḳa and his son Arghun. Remembered as the Great Khátún for her beauty and ability, she made her wishes for succession unmistakable: her successor was to come from her own family. She died beside the Kur in Georgia in 1286, and her will continued to shape the choices made after her death.
Description
Bolgana is remembered as a woman of great beauty and ability, but the text supplies no precise account of her features. Her skin tone, hair, eyes, build, and clothing are not described, so they cannot be stated with confidence. Her title, the Great Khátún, gives her a naturally dignified and commanding presence, without fixing any particular visual details.
