Gray-haired and deeply lined, Daniel carries himself with the independence of someone who answers to no one’s impatience. A bent whip rests in his hand, and his scornful gaze seems to measure the room before he deigns to speak.

As the old head kennelman, Daniel first appears in the doorway with his Circassian cap, bent whip, and unmistakably independent air. In the hunt he throws himself into the chase with fierce, physical abandon, his composure giving way to the heat and tumult of the dogs and horses. His scenes reveal a man whose authority comes less from rank than from long familiarity with the work and an uncompromising temperament.
Description
Daniel is an elderly man, gray and deeply wrinkled, with gray hair cut straight across his forehead in the Ukrainian fashion. His face can look flushed and perspiring, and in the hunt his hair hangs disheveled when he is bareheaded. He carries a long, bent whip and is seen wearing a Circassian cap; his practical, weathered presence is sharpened by an independent, scornful look.
