He has the air of a querulous old man whose temper is never far from the surface. A red nose and shuffling galoshes make him hard to overlook, while his muttering leaves you wondering what grievance has caught hold of him now.

Makár Alexéevich Bazdéev appears as an eccentric, troubled old man, first associated with a list of patients and later encountered in a dressing gown and galoshes. His drinking leaves him red-faced, unsteady, and given to angry muttering; in one alarming spell he clutches a pistol and screams hoarsely. He is finally seen swaying against a wall, his volatility giving way to drunken stupor.

Description

Tall and bald-headed, Makár has a conspicuous red nose and a face that becomes flushed and distorted with drink. His legs are thin, and his movements have a shuffling, unsteady quality. He wears a loose dressing gown, sometimes hanging open, with galoshes over bare feet. His disheveled appearance and irritable, swaying presence make him seem perpetually out of sorts.
