Matvévna

Also known as Matvévna the gun

  • First seen · Book 1 · Ch. 47

Matvévna is less a character than a hulking presence of iron and timber: an old, oversized gun that seems to anchor the battery by sheer weight. Its weathered bulk carries the quiet, grim familiarity of equipment made to endure hardship.

Matvévna is the battery’s farthest gun, large and of an old pattern. Its carriage becomes a means of carrying wounded men, including Rostóv, while the gun itself is later left behind amid the destruction. It is remembered as both a heavy instrument of war and a practical vehicle in the confusion around it.

Description

Matvévna is a large, old-pattern cannon mounted on a heavy wooden carriage. Its substantial proportions distinguish it from the other guns, while its plain, utilitarian construction suggests an older design. The weapon and carriage have a rugged, workmanlike presence, made for weight and endurance rather than elegance.
