Speránski’s striking pallor and half-lidded, humid eyes give his composed face an almost porcelain stillness. A firm smile rests there without quite revealing anything, while his polished voice and measured manner make every exchange feel carefully weighted.

Speránski rises to prominence as a celebrated statesman and reformer, moving in the highest circles of imperial power. His cool intelligence and refined public manner impress Andrei, who briefly sees in him the promise of purposeful change. Yet Andrei’s admiration fades as he comes to recognize the distance between Speránski’s elegant principles and the living world they are meant to serve. Speránski remains a figure of formidable ability, whose influence is inseparable from the limits of reason and ambition.
Description
Speránski is a tall, fair, bald man of about forty, with a large open forehead and a long face of unusual whiteness. His half-closed, humid eyes and firm smile are notably difficult to read; he has broad, plump white hands and wears spectacles. He is dressed in a swallow-tail coat bearing a star on the left breast, with a waistcoat and high white stock, and carries himself with polished restraint.
