Milorádovich arrives in the imagination already in motion: ruddy-faced, bright-eyed, and adorned with a plume that seems to announce him before he speaks. His theatrical military bearing makes him vivid and hard to overlook, all flourish and forward energy.

Milorádovich is a conspicuous Russian general whose vivid presence—ruddy face, upturned mustache, Orders, and extravagant plumed hat—makes even his brief appearances memorable. He carries himself with an emphatic military flourish, galloping into view and later seeking permission to advance. At other moments he is known through the messages and movements attributed to him, a commander whose bold public manner stands out amid the larger military machinery of the novel.

Description

Milorádovich has a ruddy complexion, wide-open glistening eyes, and a mustache twisted upward. He wears military dress, with Orders displayed on his breast; in one striking appearance he is without his greatcoat. An enormous tuft of plumes rises from his cocked hat, which sits at a rakish angle. His elbows turn outward and his shoulders lift, giving him a showy, energetic military bearing.
