Princess Catherine Semënovna

Also known as Catherine Semënovna, Catherine (empress), Catherine’s portrait

She has the unnerving stillness of a figure carved from stone: gray eyes fixed on the room, thin lips set in a line that rarely softens. Even in silence, her rigid presence makes every movement around her seem louder.

Princess Catherine Semënovna is one of Count Bezukhov’s nieces, a stern figure among the relatives gathered around his household. Her severe manner and watchful stillness make her a formidable presence, particularly as the family’s inheritance becomes a matter of urgent attention. She stands with her sisters on the old count’s side of the family, but her rigid bearing offers little warmth amid the household’s anxious maneuvering. Her defining impression is less a change of fortune than an unyielding severity that persists through the family crisis.

Description

Catherine Semënovna is thin and unusually proportioned, with a long, rigid torso above short legs. Her prominent gray eyes stare from a cold, stern face, framed by hair smoothed so tightly and evenly over her head that it seems almost molded in place. Thin lips complete her unchanging expression, while her narrow, bony hands look conspicuous against her formal dress. She holds herself straight and still, giving her an austere, statuesque presence.
