Tíkhon Shcherbáty
Also known as Shcherbáty, our Tíkhon

Tíkhon Shcherbatý seems made of restless limbs and irrepressible mischief: long arms swinging, narrow eyes bright, a gap-toothed grin ready to break across his pockmarked face. His rough peasant clothes and self-satisfied cheer give him the air of someone entirely at home in the untamed edges of army life.

A peasant known for his resourcefulness, Tíkhon Shcherbatý becomes a valued partisan scout and fighter among the Russian forces. His rough humor and audacious energy make him a memorable companion to the men around him, while his skill at moving through enemy territory proves useful to the irregular war. He embodies the fierce, unpolished ingenuity that flourishes beyond the rules of formal military life.
Description
Tíkhon Shcherbatý is lean and long-legged, with long arms that swing as he moves. His wrinkled, pockmarked face is set off by narrow little eyes and a noticeable gap where he has lost a tooth; he often wears a beaming, self-satisfied expression. He dresses in a short jacket, bast shoes, and a Kazan hat, with a musketoon over his shoulder and an ax tucked into his girdle. His wiry, loose-limbed presence is both comic and alert.

Pétya watches Tíkhon’s exploits with fascination and laughter, then briefly feels uneasy when he realizes Tíkhon has killed a man. Tíkhon’s easy familiarity with the band contrasts with Pétya’s youthful eagerness to prove himself.
