Bilíbin watches the world with small, bright eyes and a face that seems to conduct its own quiet conversation, every wrinkle ready with a change of meaning. Calm, witty, and fashionably detached, he makes even a pause feel like a polished observation waiting to be delivered.

At thirty-five, Bilíbin is a bachelor diplomat whose wit and cultivated manner turn political upheaval into material for clever observation. His famously expressive face—especially the puckering above his left temple—betrays the pleasure he takes in an idea or a well-shaped remark, even while he affects composure. He offers Andrei the perspective of an experienced man of the world, and later receives him again amid the unsettled aftermath of war. Through Bilíbin, the novel shows the elegance and irony of diplomacy beside the brutal uncertainty of events it cannot control.

Description

Bilíbin is a thin, worn-looking man of thirty-five, with a sallow face crossed by deep, mobile wrinkles. His small, deep-set eyes are always twinkling, and his expression plays across a forehead that puckers into folds beneath brows that lift and settle again. Deep creases gather in his cheeks, while the skin above his left eye and temple visibly puckers when he is amused or excited. He carries himself with comfortable composure and often examines his nails with studied ease; the text gives no precise details of his clothing.
