He arrives with a grand story and a manner too expansive for the small shelter around him. His sweeping mustaches and close, animated way of speaking make him impossible to overlook.

Zdrzhinski appears briefly as an officer who enters a rain-soaked shelter and speaks grandly of the battle of Saltánov. Bending low over his listener and crowding Rostóv in the narrow shanty, he makes an impression through sheer force of manner. The novel gives him no further arc or personal history.
Description
Zdrzhinski is an officer distinguished by long mustaches that extend onto his cheeks. He wears an officer’s uniform, though its color and cut are not specified. His defining presence is physical and animated: he bends close to his hearer and seems to fill the cramped shelter around him. No further details of his face, hair, eyes, age, or build are given.

Zdrzhinski recounts a glorified story of Raevsky’s exploit. Rostov distrusts the tale and dislikes Zdrzhinski’s grandiloquent manner but does not openly challenge it.
