The Ancient Cave Shortcut first appears as a hidden passage beneath the Spring Court estate in A Court of Thorns and Roses, serving as a clandestine escape route for Feyre and Lucien when they flee Amarantha's forces. Across the series, it evolves from a simple tactical escape tunnel into a strategic nexus linking multiple courts, facilitating secret diplomacy and military movements. By later books, the cave becomes a symbol of the fragile alliances between courts, its passages expanding and magically reinforced as the threat of war grows.
