Alice’s right foot becomes, in her imagination, a distant little correspondent worthy of the grandest manners. The formal ‘Esq.’ gives this ordinary part of her body a quietly comic dignity.

When Alice grows so tall that her feet seem far away, she imagines addressing her right foot with the formality due an absent acquaintance. She plans to send her feet presents, including new boots every Christmas. This brief comic fancy turns a moment of bewilderment into a glimpse of Alice’s playful imagination.

Description

This is Alice’s right foot, not an independently described person, and the book gives it no distinct coloring, shape, or other identifying features. It seems far away when Alice has grown very tall. Alice imagines it receiving presents, including a new boot at Christmas.
