The Gryphon seems built for legends, yet lounges in the sunlight with the easy amusement of someone who has heard every strange tale before. His voice and manner carry a brisk, teasing confidence that makes the impossible feel almost companionable.

The Gryphon first appears dozing in the sun, then wakes to guide Alice toward the Mock Turtle. He becomes her companion through the Mock Turtle’s stories and the lobster quadrille, joining in the dance and trading sharp, playful remarks. Later, he is present at the trial, where his whispers offer Alice a more grounded counterpoint to the court’s absurdity. His mixture of mythic grandeur and irreverent good sense makes him one of Wonderland’s most companionable guides.

Description

The Gryphon is a large, fantastical creature with the impressive, hybrid presence of a mythic beast. He can lie at ease in the sun, but his alertness and expressive manner suggest a lively, quick-witted mind beneath the formidable exterior. His appearance is best defined by his unmistakably legendary form and relaxed, confident bearing. The Gryphon combines the muscular body and tawny paws of a lion with broad feathered wings and an eagle’s head, sharp beak, and watchful gaze. His imposing, fantastical silhouette is softened by a relaxed, almost drowsy manner, as though he might settle back into a sunlit nap at any moment. No particular clothing or adornments are described; his hybrid form is his striking distinction.
