He looks as though he has gone too long without food or comfort: bread-and-butter in hand, tea close by, tears tracing his cheek as he munches. There is something both pitiable and strangely buoyant about him, a hungry figure whose energy can suddenly take flight.

Hatta appears just out of prison, hungry and thirsty, eating bread-and-butter and drinking tea while tears run down his cheek. In a later scene he is still munching, with Haigha close beside him and an arm affectionately around his neck. Then Hatta bounds away like a grasshopper, leaving the impression of a figure whose sorrow and exuberance sit side by side.
Description
The text gives no details of Hatta’s height, build, coloring, hair, eyes, face shape, or clothing. What it does show is a tear-streaked cheek, bread-and-butter in his hand, and a cup of tea nearby. He is described as hungry and thirsty, and his movements can become startlingly springy, like a grasshopper. Hatta is seen holding a cup of tea and a piece of bread-and-butter, with a tear trickling down his cheek. His face and other physical features, as well as his clothing and build, are not described. He has the weary, disconcerted presence of someone famished and newly released from confinement.
