Humpty Dumpty is first invoked by name, then encountered sitting cross-legged atop a high, narrow wall, his enormous face and egg-shaped form impossible to overlook. He wears a cravat given to him by the White King and Queen, and meets Alice with a confident, argumentative manner. Their conversation turns on his insistence that words can mean what he chooses them to mean. His encounter ends in a fall from the wall, after which the King’s horsemen gather around him, though they cannot put him back together.
