There's something strangely poignant about this cardboard figure who moves with careful, deliberate motions, his painted face frozen in an expression of perpetual melancholy. The chains that bind him seem almost unnecessary given his rigid, constructed form.

The Knave of Hearts exists as a constructed being made entirely of cardboard, serving both as a royal attendant and later as a prisoner within the court's proceedings. He carries the King's crown on a crimson velvet cushion during processions and later stands in chains, guarded by soldiers on either side. His cardboard composition gives him a stiff, two-dimensional quality that sets him apart from the other inhabitants of Wonderland.
Description
The Knave is constructed entirely of cardboard, giving him a flat, two-dimensional appearance with painted features and clothing in the traditional knave pattern. He carries a crown on a crimson velvet cushion and later appears in chains with guards flanking him on either side. His cardboard body has a stiff, artificial quality, and his expression carries a sad, resigned quality that seems permanently fixed on his painted face. The Knave is presented as a playing-card figure, with no specific human facial features, coloring, or build detailed in the text. He is associated with a crimson velvet cushion bearing the King’s crown, and later appears in chains with a soldier on either side. His posture and bearing are subdued, culminating in the image of a cardboard figure shaking his head sadly.
