There's a quiet surrender in the way he sits, wrapped in borrowed warmth, his body folded inward like something already half-gone. The pale face holds no curiosity, only the weight of having endured too much.

Karcev began as a former Moscow Komsomol worker, already weakened by his time in the Verkhneuralsk political isolator. After a ten-day hunger strike, he arrived exhausted and indifferent to everything around him. His final days were marked by pneumonia and pulmonary edema, lying on a bench wrapped in a blanket, his body consumed by dystrophy.
Description
His frame is skeletal, the sharp knees and protruding shoulder blades giving him the appearance of a bird with clipped wings. The pale face is drawn with suffering, eyes often closed against the world. He wears borrowed clothing beneath a blanket, his body showing the ravages of prolonged hunger and illness.
