черт

He has the air of a drab clerk who has wandered in from somewhere decidedly worse: creased black clothes, a prim little pair of horns, and yellow nails that catch the eye. Beneath the old-fashioned neatness is a quietly infernal unease.

The черт appears as an antagonist in the collection, wearing the reassuringly ordinary guise of a shabby, old-fashioned man while his horns, clipped tail, and flame-patterned tie betray his nature. The text gives him no broader personal history or relationships, but his carefully mundane presentation makes the demonic feel uncomfortably close at hand.
Description
The черт is a slight, human-shaped male figure dressed in a rumpled old-fashioned black suit, black silk shirt, blunt-toed shoes, and a black, shovel-shaped tie marked with scarlet flames. Small, neatly arranged horns show through his tidy hair, while a short docked tail and long yellow fingernails make his inhuman nature unmistakable. His appearance is dark and clerical, with a composed, faintly menacing presence.
