There is an unmistakable intelligence in the quick, bright presence of these sea-dwellers, and their laughter seems to carry more meaning than a human observer might expect. They make the ocean feel less like a wilderness than a neighboring world.

The dolphins are mentioned as Earth’s marine mammals, recognized by the Aliens as a separate intelligent civilization. Their brief appearance culminates in a striking image: they laugh in the dream of a drunken official. Beyond that glimpse, their society and individual lives remain outside the frame.
Description
The dolphins are Earth’s marine mammals, sleek-bodied and at home in the sea. Their precise coloring, size, and distinguishing markings are not specified, so these details should not be fixed. They are characterized instead by their apparent intelligence and expressive, laughing presence, which makes them feel like inhabitants of a neighboring civilization rather than merely part of the scenery.
