Tom is a carpenter at a sawmill whose arm is severed just below the elbow. The little people successfully sew it back on, fastening the repair with copper staples, and he returns to the world as a man bearing an extraordinary, visible mending. His fondness for gin adds another rough edge to the picture of a working life that has never been especially gentle.
Description
Tom is a male carpenter with a work-worn, practical appearance; his age, build, complexion, hair, and eyes are not specified. He wears the straightforward clothing of a sawmill worker. His most distinctive feature is his repaired arm: the hand has been reattached below the elbow, with copper staples marking the seam. He has the unadorned, no-nonsense presence of a laborer.
