Chapter-by-chapter progression through Cradle
Chapter 1
In the aftermath of the Blackflame Empire's fall, Lindon trains as a Soulsmith under Fisher Gesha in the Desolate Wilds, dissecting a dreadbeast to extract a Striker binding and crafting a basic launcher construct. When Gesha tests him by summoning a purple Remnant that drags him across the forest floor, Lindon realizes his impatience and overreach; she rescues him only after extracting his promise to respect the proper pace of advancement. The chapter's tone is one of gritty instruction and quiet humiliation, underscoring that true power demands methodical growth rather than shortcuts.
Chapter 2
Jai Long comforts his dying sister Jai Chen with news of Kral’s death and reveals the Ancestor’s Spear, vowing to return to the Jai clan for revenge and healing. He then faces the grieving Sandviper chief Gokren, who instead of blaming him pledges his sect’s aid, and together they march against the Jai. Meanwhile, Lindon returns to camp with Fisher Gesha, who fears Eithan’s wrath; the Underlord appears, teases them, and claims Lindon for brutal training while Gesha refuses to join them.
Chapter 3
In the newly constructed training barn, Eithan reveals a script-powered dummy course designed to sharpen combat timing and madra control. Yerin clears the eighteen dummies in fifteen seconds with practiced grace, while Lindon attempts a shortcut by activating the control circle—earning a pointed lesson on the difference between clever tricks and genuine strength. The arrival of Cassias Arelius interrupts the session with urgent news: the Jai clan has seized Arelius assets in Serpent’s Grave and is actively sabotaging their operations, forcing Eithan to accelerate his plans for the group’s departure.
Chapter 4
In a nighttime raid on Jai clan shelters, Jai Long and the Sandvipers capture eight sacred artists to test the Ancestor's Spear, a weapon that can steal madra. When Jai clan reinforcements arrive—including a Truegold elder—Gokren engages the elder while Jai Long faces six Lowgold bodyguards. Using the spear, Jai Long absorbs power from his defeated opponents, nearly destroying himself in the process, but survives to witness the Sandvipers' victory and their growing interest in the weapon's power.
Chapter 5
In Chapter 5, Lindon commits to Eithan’s grueling training regimen aboard the Arelius cloudship Sky’s Mercy, choosing the rocky path of an Underlord’s patronage over the safer Fishers’ route to Truegold. Eithan reveals the Jai clan’s looming war and the duel’s political stakes, then assigns Lindon to raise his second core to Iron and master the eighteen-dummy course while Yerin must integrate her Goldsign. The chapter closes on a note of uneasy resolve as the two begin their month-long ascent, aware that failure means death and success may cost them everything.
Chapter 6
Jai Long prepares to flee east with his injured sister Jai Chen and the Sandvipers to wage war on the Jai clan, rejecting the safety of a western hidden valley. Meanwhile, aboard Sky's Mercy, Lindon pushes himself through grueling physical labor, Remnant combat, Soulsmith training, and a punishing new cycling technique—the Heaven and Earth Purification Wheel—while Eithan accelerates the cloudship's recharge with his own madra. The chapter balances the grim resolve of revenge with Lindon's relentless, self-imposed drive to grow stronger.
Chapter 7
As Sky's Mercy approaches Serpent's Grave, Cassias confronts Eithan about the brutal training regimen designed for Lindon, learning the Underlord's shocking plan to have the boy cultivate Blackflame madra in the ancient dragon ruins. Cassias, who sacrificed his birthright as family heir for Eithan, struggles to accept the risk of exposing Lindon to forbidden power. Meanwhile, Lindon and Yerin push through their final training session, with Lindon completing the eighteen-dummy course in twenty-one seconds while Yerin grapples with whether to consume her master's Remnant to advance to Highgold, their conversation revealing deepening trust between them as Eithan overhears Lindon's cryptic reference to heavenly visions.
Chapter 8
In Chapter 8, Lindon and Yerin arrive in Serpent's Grave aboard Sky's Mercy, witnessing the sprawling city built within a dragon's skeletal remains. Eithan, revealed as the Arelius Patriarch, is greeted by prostrate servants who report escalating conflicts with the Jai clan, including sabotage, a rogue spirit in the sewers, and Skysworn investigations. The chapter's tension peaks when Jai Daishou, the Jai Patriarch, publicly humiliates Eithan with overwhelming spiritual pressure, forcing the Arelius Underlord to his knees before the servants. Meanwhile, Jai Long and his sister Jai Chen arrive at the city's edge, their return charged with personal and political stakes. The emotional tone shifts from awe at the mythic city to the sharp sting of political rivalry and the quiet resolve of those caught between powerful clans.
Chapter 9
In the Arelius family's hidden archive, Eithan reveals a copper construct that projects holographic demonstrations of sacred arts techniques. He guides Lindon through various Paths to counter Jai Long's Stellar Spear techniques, ultimately steering him toward the Path of Black Flame—a destructive fire-and-destruction madra path that perfectly counters Jai Long's defenses but risks physical corruption. Lindon accepts the Path despite its dangers, learning they'll train in a dragon-sealed cave beneath Serpent's Grave.
Chapter 10
In the sealed tunnels beneath Serpent’s Grave, Eithan brings Lindon to meet Orthos, a three-hundred-year-old dragon-turtle whose mind has been ravaged by excess Blackflame madra. After explaining that the sacred beast’s power can be shared through a mutual soul-contract, Lindon places his hand on Orthos’s head and swears to open his core; the bond floods him with destructive madra, and with Eithan’s guidance he advances to Jade. As the newly Jade Lindon flees the ensuing spar between Eithan and Orthos, he feels both the turtle’s pride and the first stirrings of his own Blackflame core.
Chapter 11
In the tunnels beneath Serpent’s Grave, Orthos teaches Lindon the nature of vital aura and the destructive power of the Blackflame Path, culminating in a three-day cycling session amid a dragon skeleton’s blazing aura. Meanwhile, Jai Long assassinates three Jai Lowgolds in Serpent’s Grave to lure his clan into pursuit, while Yerin and Lindon are led by Eithan to the ancient Black Dragon Trials—an isolated valley where they must conquer three scripted challenges together. Eithan’s secretive motives and Cassias’s warnings underscore the high stakes and moral ambiguity of the training.
Chapter 12
Lindon and Yerin settle into their isolated basin camp, discovering warm sulfurous water, thorny berry bushes, and a cliff face teeming with dog-sized mud crabs. At the red archway marking Trial One, Lindon deciphers the stone tablet's history of the Blackflame clan's dragon contracts and learns the 'Burning Cloak' Enforcer technique from Yerin, which dramatically enhances his speed but rapidly drains his madra. Meanwhile, Cassias is reluctantly conscripted by Eithan to oversee the Trials from a hidden control room overlooking the valley, where he must push the pair to their limits or force their surrender.
Chapter 13
Lindon and Yerin fail Trial One when Lindon's Blackflame core empties mid-fight against a stone giant, triggering defeat. Yerin single-handedly battles an army of constructs while Lindon watches in awe, but both are overwhelmed. Later, they analyze the trial's mechanics over a corrupted campfire, with Yerin frustrated by Lindon's cautious approach and her own internal struggle with her master's Remnant. Meanwhile, in Iteration 217: Harrow, Suriel rescues the last survivor and discovers Ozriel's hidden message revealing he prepared evacuation facilities across sixteen worlds before vanishing during a battle.
Chapter 14
Lindon discovers that the Sylvan Riverseed has transformed into a miniature woman and can now cleanse Blackflame corrosion from his spirit, allowing multiple Trial attempts in one day. He and Yerin exploit this advantage to challenge the Enforcer Trial three times consecutively, pushing deeper into the course and exhausting its power reserves. Cassias, monitoring from above, intervenes by pouring his own madra into the Trial to prevent their victory, while both Lindon and Yerin show significant growth in skill and coordination despite their ultimate failure.
Chapter 15
After shattering the Enforcer Trial through relentless repetition, Lindon and Yerin collapse, then turn to the Striker Trial. Eithan arrives dramatically with promised gifts—a Spirit Manifestation pill for Yerin to reach Highgold safely and Blackflame scales for Lindon—while warning that Lowgold remains their ceiling. As they begin practicing the Striker technique, the Trial activates, revealing a destruction-aura barrier and spear-forging shadow targets that force them to fight from range. The chapter closes on a note of grim determination as Lindon, exhausted and out of time, asks Yerin to cover his retreat so they can regroup and strategize.
Chapter 16
Lindon and Yerin finally complete the Striker Trial by using pure-madra shells to stabilize Blackflame madra long enough to destroy the targets. Orthos appears, offers brief instruction on the dragon’s-breath technique, then loses control of his spirit and rampages, forcing the pair to hide. Meanwhile, Jai Long’s rebellion is crushed when Jai Daishou captures him and his sister; the Underlord forces Jai Long to swear absolute loyalty and then signals a coordinated Jai-clan assault on the Arelius family.
Chapter 17
As the Jai clan launches a coordinated massacre against the Arelius family, Eithan is trapped by a boundary formation while Cassias fights through the streets to reach his wife. Meanwhile, Orthos succumbs to his unstable core and attacks Lindon and Yerin in the Blackflame Trials, forcing them into a desperate battle against their own ally.
Chapter 18
In the canyon's Ruler Trial, Yerin and Lindon battle the rampaging Orthos until Yerin realizes Lindon's Twin Stars core has grown stronger thanks to Eithan's cycling technique. When they spare the turtle and flee the collapsing city, two Truegolds—Jai Long and Sandviper Gokren—ambush them at the exit. Yerin kicks Lindon back into the Trials and fights alone while Gokren pursues Lindon, who is poisoned and left for dead until Orthos intervenes and Little Blue's marble restores his will to cycle.
Chapter 19
Yerin, cornered and exhausted on the mountain, finally accepts that her master’s Remnant is no longer his voice and crushes it to fuel her advancement to Highgold. The surge of sword aura and inherited memories grants her a second Goldsign and the Steelborn Iron body’s raw strength, allowing her to drive Jai Long back until he retreats. Meanwhile, Lindon’s desperate battle with Orthos and the Sandvipers ends when he reaches Lowgold, his Blackflame Striker technique severing Gokren’s hand and Orthos’ Ruler technique incinerating the rest, leaving both exhausted yet alive as they sense Eithan’s Underlord power nearby.
Chapter 20
Jai Daishou unleashes his most devastating technique, the Fall of Seven Stars, but Eithan survives and reveals his pure madra Path by neutralizing attacks and shattering the Ancestor's Spear with ordinary scissors. The Jai Patriarch is slain, and Eithan—bloodied but victorious—sends Lindon to rescue Jai Chen, Jai Long's sister held hostage. Lindon finds her weakened and terrified; she stabs him in futile resistance before he discovers her shattered spirit and the reason for her captivity.
Chapter 21
In a pivotal encounter, Wei Shi Lindon uses his water-spirit Dross to repair Jai Chen’s damaged madra channels, restoring her ability to cycle and breathe freely for the first time in years. Grateful yet wary, Jai Chen promises to deliver Lindon’s message to her brother Jai Long, while Lindon departs under the wary eyes of Jai clan guards. Meanwhile, the dying Jai Daishou plots revenge against Eithan Arelius, and Abidan Judge Suriel discovers that her intervention has thrown Cradle’s fate wildly off-course, prompting an urgent summons from Makiel.
Chapter 22
Skysworn Truegolds Renfei and Bai Rou, patrolling Serpent’s Grave, detect Blackflame madra and confront Lowgold Wei Shi Lindon Arelius after he tests the Ruler technique Void Dragon’s Dance on Mount Shiryu. They arrest the young disciple of Eithan Arelius, declaring that a living Blackflame cannot remain free. Meanwhile, Eithan visits Emperor Naru Huan in the capital, admits he failed to kill Jai Daishou, and requests that Lindon still be allowed to fight despite his custody.
