Black Rolf enters as a thickly-set aging man with bear-like posture, shaggy black hair and beard, caught in Buckkeep's underbelly. Beaten brutally by guards—belly punches, face blows, kicked down bruised and battered—he embodies the plight of the lowly amid royal justice. His rough encounter with Fitz highlights the era's harsh divides between folk and guards.
