Vesta Carmis Zell is an astral king whose presence shifts from a direct, violent antagonist in book 10 to a looming, largely unseen power in book 11. In the earlier volume she manifests as the prime avatar of an astral king, her exquisite, ghostlike beauty masking a ruthless will that brands and feeds upon her messengers. When Jali Corrik Fen rebels, Vesta attempts to tear her apart from within, revealing the cruelty beneath her authority. By book 11 her influence persists through lingering soul brands and fearful subordinates, yet she herself never appears, her domain only referenced in the context of bargains, defections, and the ongoing struggle to remove her control.

Description

Vesta appears as a slightly blurred, ghostlike woman with olive skin, dark hair, and an exquisitely beautiful face. Her athletic frame is lean yet muscular, with a powerful build, and she floats above the floor at a height that makes her loom even over a seven-foot-tall man. Broad hawk-like wings spread behind her, patterned in brown and white. Her scale and stillness give her an imposing, otherworldly presence. Vesta Carmis Zell is not physically described. Although referred to as an astral king and once as “her,” the text supplies no details about appearance, build, coloring, hair, eyes, clothing, or distinguishing features.
