Suus, the once-proud island nation of the Hierarchy, begins the series as a conquered territory whose royal family has been slaughtered and whose people live under the boot of the Catenan Republic. Across the books, Suus transforms from a silent graveyard of lost sovereignty into a crucible of rebellion, its ruins and hidden strongholds becoming the symbolic and strategic heart of the growing resistance. By the later volumes, Suus evolves from a symbol of defeat into the first free territory reclaimed from the Hierarchy, its liberation serving as both a rallying cry and a blueprint for dismantling the oppressive system.
